We’re in! Sort of. We slept there last night for the first time, but there’s still a crapload of stuff at the old house to haul over today and tomorrow. And I had to go back to work today, so that means there will be a lot to do tonight.

It was a crazy busy weekend. We were supposed to get the keys last Monday or Tuesday, but the previous residents weren’t actually out until Thursday. Even though they were supposed to be out on the 14th. We took a couple of loads over on Friday, but Mark had to go to work in the afternoon, so the majority of stuff was done this past weekend. Including scrubbing the house from top to bottom, because it was FILTHY. I mean, hair in the tub, toothpaste in the sink, grease on the kitchen walls and cupboards, dirt and stickiness and who-knows-what all over the floors. My friend Deb and I worked all day Saturday and were fairly high on bleach fumes by the time the guys arrived with the first load. It was honestly the grossest thing. And that’s not even counting the crayon and pencil marks on the walls, the non-draining tub and bathroom sink, the lint-covered air-vents, and the weed-infested yard. Lovely.

All the same, I am quite happy with the house and everyone else seems to be too. Once the usual moving hurdles were overcome — flat tire on the trailer, rain on Saturday, stupid squabbles among the guys about how and when and what to move where — things went fairly well. Kev was awesome, and worked his tail off all weekend with fairly little complaining and whining. To his credit, he was probably the most mature person of the male persuasion we had on Saturday (the other Y-chromosome bearers were my dad and Mark, and it was definitely NOT to their credit that the 14-year-old was the most mature of the three of them).

I had to dry off after my shower this morning with paper towels and a fleece blanket because I couldn’t find the bath towels anywhere. It wasn’t very effective. So now we’re in that stage where we don’t know where anything is, we find things like Minute Rice and canned soup but have nothing to cook them in, no one can remember our new phone number, and we’re still waiting on cable and an internet connection. (I was in internet withdrawal - it’s a good thing I had to come back to work today, seriously). Also, I took a ton of pictures but I can’t find the card reader or USB cord for the camera so I can’t get them OFF the camera.

Mimi has been a trooper (trouper?) I was concerned about how she would deal with the stress and the big change, and aside from some hyper giddiness and one big meltdown, she’s been basically fine. She has been very excited to show off her new room to her cousins and everyone helping with the move, and went to sleep last night in HER OWN BED in HER OWN ROOM. She did wake up around 3 am and started crying because she couldn’t find us, but once she remembered where everyone was she was fine. And when she woke up this morning the first thing she said was “I like our new house!” Whew.

Boo’s had the hardest time. Poor thing has no idea what’s going on. Yesterday my dad and Kev were carrying her crib out to the truck and she looks up and gets this pathetic look on her face and says pitifully “MAH BED!” Every time another room would get cleared out she’d wander through looking mystified. Once we got to the new house last night, however, and she saw her room and her bed and toys and everything, she seemed ok. She went to sleep without any problems and slept almost straight through the night. She really seems to enjoy the hardwood floors in the living room and hall — thumpthumpthump down the hall, thumpthumpthump back into the living room, thumpthumpthump over to the front door, etc. It’s amazing how two small children can sound so much like a herd of elephants.

So. All seems well, for now. Pictures soon. After I come down from my bleach-inhalation high, and find some towels.
