No advice on the car, I'm afraid. As for Crocs orthotics, I am so not surprised. But even if you wore them, I would still love you. Because that's what friends do.

There are now several hybrid SUV's. That might be an option for you.

We have an older subaru that we got shortly before T was born. We're pretty happy with it, and even though it's nearly 10 years old, it certainly doesn't run like it. DH still misses his Honda Insight terribly, though.

I hope this is a better week for you!

my father has a Mazda 5 and absolutely loves it. It's great on gas mileage, folds down to haul stuff but hte 3rd row seat is actually quite usable and we have gone to the restaurant 4 adults and 2 car-seat kiddos and been just peachy in there.

Could you compromise on the new car thing and get a year old program car? Do you have such things there? We rarely buy anything new anymore, but go that route--generally the colors they have available tend to be limited, but you get a car that someone drove for a year and worked all the bugs out of--the mileage is usually around 12-18K, and the cost is significantly less. All three of my last three cars have been programs--all sold new in the mid-20's, but the program cars ran about 14K.
